Maysville Fire Department Training Tower

The Maysville Fire Department recently constructed a new fire-training tower, which was completed in early 2004. The 3-½-story tower with a burn room is located on Martha Comer Drive. The tower was partially funded by a grant of $112,500 through the Kentucky State Fire Commission.
The tower has a burn room and a burn corner on the third floor. This burn room and burn corner enable firefighters to create repeated fires up to 1200F., followed by extinguishment with the use of water without damage to either the structure or the system. This tower can also be used to practice rescue operations, ventilation, laddering operations, rappelling, hose advancement, confined space and real life training experiences.

The tower is an important training tool to all members of the department. All Maysville Firefighters are required to have at least 100 hours of fire training per year to keep up their certification. In order to become certified, a fire officer must complete 400 hours of training in all areas of fire fighting. The Kentucky Commission on Fire Protection Personnel Standards and Education approves the required course categories.

The categories are as follows:
Administration & Organization, Safety, Fire Alarm & Communications, Fire Behavior, Portable Fire Extinguishers, Personal Protective Equipment, Forcible Entry, Ventilation, Ropes, Ladders, Fire Hose/Nozzles/Appliances, Foam Fire Streams, Fire Control, Salvage, Overhaul, Rescue, Water Supply, Sprinklers, Haz-Mat, Fire Prevention, Building Construction, Aircraft Crash Firefighting, Emergency & Disaster Planning, Pumper Operations & Maintenance and Drivers Training.
If you are an individual or a group interested in seeing the training tower and how it works, please contact Chief Eric Bach at 606-564-9411.
