This May Be the Smallest Theater Premier in History

Maysville, KY—It’s been two years in the making. The interior of the Russell Theatre in miniature will make its debut April 17-18 in the Kathleen Savage Browning Miniatures Collection (KSBMC) at the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center in Maysville, Kentucky.

The exterior of the iconic theater in miniature has been exhibited at the museum since 2010. Both pieces were created by renowned Chicago artisans Allison Ashby and Steven Jedd.
“It was the most educational project we’ve ever attempted,” says Ashby, recalling their initial visits to the full-size Russell Theatre to measure, photograph and draw the interior. They scraped through layers of paint to uncover the original jewel-toned color scheme and relied heavily on historical research to recreate parts of the interior which no longer exist.

The Spanish atmospheric auditorium features private balconies, elaborate minarets and statuary all replicated in one-twelfth scale. More than 1,000 pieces were used to create the 100 tiny upholstered chairs. Approximately 60 different trim styles were crafted for the auditorium and eighty-five separate lighting fixtures were produced to recreate the original theater’s lighting.

The Russell Theatre Miniature Unveiling of the Interior begins at 10 a.m. April 17 at the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center. The theater’s artisans will give a behind-the-scenes-look at KSBMC’s newest miniature and be available to answer questions. Twenty other high-profile artisans will be presenting demonstrations throughout the two-day event which includes a silent auction and closing party at the Russell Theatre on Third Street. Collectors and artisans from around the world will be attending the premier and touring the KSBMC, which displays thousands of the finest collectible miniatures in the world. The all-inclusive registration fee for this two-day event is $125. If you wish to attend only the dinner and entertainment featuring the ‘Sing-Off’ acoUstiKats the cost is $40 for KGMC members and $50 for non-members.
