African Americans in Times of War

Before they had the right to vote, before they had the right to sit down at lunch counters, drink from “white” water fountains or sit at the front of the bus, African Americans have served and fought for the United States.

The theme of Black History Month this year is African Americans in Times of War, which celebrates the centennial of the end of World War I. This theme provides a framework to examine the unique challenges and opportunities to black soldiers and black communities throughout the many wars in which African Americans have served.
