Fire Department Employment Opportunities

The City of Maysville is accepting a pool of applicants for potential positions with the Maysville’s Fire Department.  These positions will be full-time and will be filled on an as needed basis. 

FIREFIGHTER/EMT

The successful candidate will have the desire and compassion to help others and to protect lives, property and the environment. 

The primary responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Daily inspection, maintenance, and cleanliness of vehicles, equipment and station.
  • Performs all forms of emergency services to include but not limited to fire, basic and advanced life support, hazardous material, rescue, and public education events as directed.
  • Has daily contact with the public requiring the utmost tact and courtesy.
  • Required to make instantaneous decisions on all types of emergency situations requiring mature judgment and knowledge.
  • Tasks and duties as directed by the Shift Captain.
  • The position will be a 24/48 shift.
  • Required to attend mandatory trainings and in-house meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • High School Diploma/GED certificate
  • Must have current CPAT (Candidate Physical Agility Test) certification or obtain certification prior to offer of employment.
  • Must have strong work ethic, interpersonal skills and ability to adapt to diverse circumstances.
  • Must pass a written exam, with a score of at least 70%, complete a panel interview and have an acceptable background check.
  • Must be Kentucky EMT Basic certified prior to appointment
  • Candidates must pass pre-employment drug screening.
  • Previous firefighting experience preferred.

FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC

The primary responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Daily inspection, maintenance, and cleanliness of vehicles, equipment and station.
  • Performs all forms of emergency services to include but not limited to fire, basic and advanced life support, hazardous material, rescue, and public education events as directed.
  • Has daily contact with the public requiring the utmost tact and courtesy.
  • Required to make instantaneous decisions on all types of emergency situations requiring mature judgment and knowledge.
  • Tasks and duties as directed by the Shift Captain.
  • The position will be a 24/48 shift.
  • Required to attend mandatory trainings and in-house meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous firefighting experience preferred.
  • Must be a Kentucky certified Paramedic and maintain certification.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Must have strong work ethic, interpersonal skills and ability to adapt to diverse circumstances.

To be eligible for hire, candidates must pass a background check, pre-employment physical, and drug screening.  Must have current CPAT (Candidate Physical Agility Test) certification or obtain certification prior to offer of employment or qualify for lateral transfer. 

FIRE LIEUTENANT

The primary responsibilities of this position will include, but not limited to the following: 

  • Under direction, drives fire apparatus and operates related fire equipment; directs the activities of personnel and equipment on assigned fire engine; performs fire suppression and fire prevention duties; supervises immediate subordinates for the efficient application of manpower and equipment until relieved by a superior.
  • Ensures proper care and maintenance for equipment on assigned fire engines.
  • Assumes the regular responsibilities and duties of Captain in the absence of the Captain.
  • Performs fire prevention, fire suppression, rescue activities and emergency transport services.
  • Responds to fire, accident and disaster alarms and suppresses the extinguishes fires.
  • Performs equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Performs routine upkeep of building and its contents.
  • Attends training sessions and seminars to enhance and maintain self-knowledge of present and new methods and techniques of firefighting and emergency service functions; speaks to community groups and individuals to promote fire and safety prevention.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • IFSAC Firefighter I
  • IFSAC Firefighter II
  • IFSAC Hazmat Awareness
  • IFSAC Hazmat Operations
  • Must be Kentucky EMT Basic certified
  • Minimum of 2 years as a full-time career firefighter.  
  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures; inventory, fire apparatus operation and maintenance, tools, equipment and instruments utilized in firefighting and emergency operations.
  • Familiarity of geographical layout of city, locations of hydrants and pump pressure, fire suppression and prevention techniques, safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, act in stressful situations, sustain physical activity for prolonged periods of time under hazardous conditions.
  • Skilled in the area of operation of fire and emergency apparatus and equipment; and routine custodial methods, procedures and equipment.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.

 FIRE CAPTAIN

The primary responsibilities of this position will include, but not limited to the following: 

  • Under general direction, directs and supervises the activities of a fire station; performs firefighting, rescue, emergency medical care and repair and maintenance of equipment; acts in capacity of Assistant Fire Chief as required.
  • Directs, supervises and participated in fire company activities (e.g., firefighting, rescue, equipment and apparatus maintenance, etc.).
  • Schedules and assigns employee work tasks; develops and implements training programs.
  • Instructs firefighting personnel in fire safety, equipment and apparatus operations, and fire suppression and prevention techniques.
  • Evaluates and recommends personnel job performance; recommends discipline.
  • Assume command on the scene of an emergency of fire in the absence of the Assistant Fire Chief.
  • Performs company inspections.
  • Participates in fire prevention, fire suppression and rescue activities; responds to fire accident and disaster alarms to suppress and extinguish fires; and emergency transport services.
  • Inspects equipment and delegates tasks to ensure proper operation and inventory of emergency and firefighting equipment on assigned apparatus.
  • Maintains records and prepares and submits reports.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned by the Assistant Chief or Fire Chief.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • IFSAC Firefighter I
  • IFSAC Firefighter II
  • IFSAC Hazmat Awareness
  • IFSAC Hazmat Operations
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience as a full-time career firefighter.  
  • Must be Kentucky EMT Basic certified
  • Knowledge of City and departmental policies and procedures, supervision, fire suppression and fire prevention techniques, fire apparatus operation and maintenance, management principles and procedures, employee training and development procedures, safety practices and procedures, operation of fire and emergency equipment and apparatus, tools; methods and procedures used in equipment and building maintenance.
  • Ability to deal with many variables and to determine specific actions, perform and act under stressful conditions, sustain physical activity for prolonged periods of time, communicate effectively in written and oral form, work as a team member in fighting fires; follow oral and written instructions; and demonstrable skills in operation of fire and emergency equipment apparatus.

ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF

Works under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief with responsibilities including but not limited to oversite of departmental policies and procedures, staff training and development, and operational functions.  This position must be compliant with all federal, state, and local firefighting and occupational safety regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the fire department, including both shift and administrative functions within the department.
  • Acts as the primary coordinator of the department in management scenarios for large fires, rescues, and other emergencies.
  • Assist as the incident commander on large fires, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergency scenes as needed.
  • Assists the Fire Chief in tracking and accounting of fire department financial concerns including payroll, purchasing, and billing.
  • Assist the Fire Chief in the recruitment new personnel.
  • Responsible for serving as the department head in the absence of the Fire Chief.
  • Develops short and long-term assignments for departmental activities.
  • Plans and coordinates fire personnel training programs.
  • Responsible for administering daily assignments to the Shift Captains and other shift officers.
  • Coordinates work schedules for shift personnel to maintain adequate and consistent staffing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • HS Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 6 years of full-time career fight fighter experience.
  • Must be Kentucky EMT Basic certified
  • Supervisory experience preferred.

Candidates must also possess, extensive knowledge of modern firefighting principles, methods, and techniques; extensive knowledge of the operation and maintenance of fire vehicles, equipment and related apparatus; and the ability to establish and enforce departmental operating procedures.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are also required.
